Here are some chemical alternatives that you can use.

1.  Alternative non-phosphate based builders, such as Zeolite A, Citric Acid, and
NTA (nitrilo-tri-acetic acid)
can be used in replacing sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) as builders in detergents. STPP  produces a significant increase of the phosphorus load in surface water and a significant risk for eutrophication.  Read more...

2.  Glycolic acid is an alternative to the more corrosive phosphoric acid and hydrochloric acid in concrete remover formulations.  Glycolic acid has high solubility and small molecular size allow it to penetrate deep inside concrete residues and react from within. Biodegradable glycolic acid is easier to dispose than phosphoric acid and hydrochloric acid.  Read more...
